Vinland Saga 1 Has Arrived!

It’s here! Finally! Vinland Saga 1 by Makoto Yukimura
Out digitally and in print on October 8th, 2013!

As a child, Thorfinn sat at the feet of the great Leif Ericson and thrilled to wild tales of a land far to the west. But his youthful fantasies were shattered by a mercenary raid. Raised by the Vikings who murdered his family, Thorfinn became a terrifying warrior, forever seeking to kill the band’s leader, Askeladd, and avenge his father. Sustaining Throfinn through his ordeal are his pride in his family and his dreams of a fertile westward land, a land without war or slavery…the land Leif called Vinland.

Looks very good! The extra story was the real reason that pushed me to pre-order this. Will the next books also contain extra stories? Hopefully, hopefully.

The short story “For Our Farewell Is Near” will be serialized in our editions of Vinland Saga, so yes, future volumes of Vinland Saga will have that! I think volume 2 will also have an interview with Yukimura-sensei.

Ha, ha. I think all the three commenters here are from Finland :) Then it will sell there. I have also pre-ordered the first 3 volumes.

Thank you for the reply Morgan!

My copy came in a little early, it was a fantastic read and will be a fine addition to my collection along Planetes (which you should really look into licensing and printing – it’s too rare) by the same artist.

It was great seeing Yukimura’s strong artwork and sense attached to something more historical and action orientated as well.

For Our Farewell Is Near was a fine read as well, but I think I’ll binge read through those chapters when I get a line up of the volumes together.

Amazon just isn’t carrying it right now. My pre-order was canceled as well. I can find it fine on other booksellers like Barnes & Noble so I would just go there, personally.

Amazon has a history of pulling products from a seller if something goes wrong once or twice (nintendo couldn’t sell any consoles on amazon for a long while due to this) so I’m sure Kodansha and Amazon are just going through negotiations and Amazon “switched off” all their products until it’s over.

In regards to your last paragraph– no, that is incorrect. All other Kodansha books are fine on Amazon. Vinland Saga volumes 2+ will also be fine. This is an isolated issue that only affects Vinland Saga 1.

In the meantime, plenty of other retailers have copies– in fact, most everyone else has copies by this point! I would encourage you to shop elsewhere for this volume right now.

I pre ordered this book on Amazon the moment I heard it was coming to America. I got an email from amazon saying it was delayed with no available arrival date. The page for the first volume is completely taken down on the site as well. I was wondering if you knew anything about this or if anything was being done about it.

I would’ve tried customer service but I couldn’t find customer service anywhere on the kodansha site.

      Hello Ryan,

I’m sure you, like many others, have received a cancellation email from Amazon. That caught us by surprise– yes, there were some issues with the delay, but we thought Amazon was making progress on their end.

We encourage you to seek out the book from other retailers. Most other stores have it by this point– the book released in mid-October. We’re very sorry you had to go through this wait.

How many color pages are inside the book?

There will be 5 color pages per volume (4 pages of story & 1 page of the alternate cover we didn’t use).

I’m brazilian and I’m very jealous of you! Look how that issue became beautiful! Here in Brazil we have to settle for the standard edition on newspaper paper.

I loved this volume, and it’s so refreshing to finally read story/comic that is about the norse that has historical research involved. I’ve just seen that volume 2 is about to be released in January 2014 – is this the english translation?

Is Kodansha placing the anti-theft tags inside on the paper binding, or is the retailer? I ordered a copy from Amazon and thought that it was unusual for a mail-order store to have an anti-theft tag stuck inside. That is, unless someone sent back a copy as a return from a brick and mortar store.

Those things are a pain to remove without damaging the book. Took a hairdryer and about 10 minutes of care.

We definitely do not do this. Any anti-theft sticky garbage was put there by the retailer. I’m sorry you had to go through that, and as a reader I feel your pain.
