As some of you may know, this October we’re releasing Book One of Vinland Saga, the historical action manga by Makoto Yukimura, the artist of Planetes. If you’re not familiar with it, it’s set in medieval England during the Viking invasions, and it follows a band of Viking warriors through an epic story of vengeance, blood, tragedy, royal intrigue and more blood. A lot of people have been looking forward to this series for a long time (including us), and we intend to do it right.
This release is going to mark many firsts for us, and as promised it’s going to be packed to the brim with extras. Let me get straight to the details!
- Two volumes in one. 460+ pages including extras.
- The first Kodansha Comics hardcover release.
- Larger trim size of about 8 inches by 5.5 inches (for you to better appreciate this stunning artwork).
- Exclusive Q&A with Yukimura created specifically for the U.S. edition.
- Viking cosplay photos from the artist! (Yes, you read that right!)
- And most exciting, we’ll be serializing the unreleased Yukimura story “For Our Farewell Is Near” (“Sayonara ga chikai no de”) in our editions of Vinland Saga!
There will also be several little Easter eggs (excuse me — I mean Ēostre eggs) in the book design for observant readers. Until then! Skoal!

It’s not available for preorder through B&N yet, though.
Amazing, I am stunned by this awesome news. I can’t wait to read it and have it on my bookshelf. GOOD LUCK!!
Awesome. I can’t wait to have it on my bookshelf.
My body is not ready.
I have never bought anything from Kodansha before…
But I think there’s a first time for everything!
Vinland Saga is my all time favorite manga and I’m glad to see it’s getting the royal treatment. Though I have two questions:
1. Since it’s two volumes in one what happens to the cover for volume two?
It’s not a huge deal if it’s left out but still it would be cool to have.
2. Since it’s two volumes in one and monthly in the original Japanese what kind of release schedule should we expect for your release of the series?
I’m guessing once or twice a year?
Seriously though I’m hugely excited for this!
Make way for Vinland!
Thanks, Al! To answer your questions:
1. We’re going to try to make room for the Vol. 2 cover art inside the book.
2. Vol. 2 is scheduled for January 2014.
First off thanks for the quick reply.
Secondly that is awesome.
Thirdly that is mega awesome.
Fourthly…I think I’m in love.
Words cannot express the joy I have in being a manga fan right now. I know some people were bummed to hear that Vertical wouldn’t be able to give Vinland Saga the HC treatment and a release due to licensing rights so it’s a pleasant surprise that Kodansha is giving manga fans the same love. Not sure if it was you’re doing in making this happen but, Ben Applegate you are a beautiful man. Now please work your magic in somehow giving us Devilman.
I was wondering, del rey had the manga Moyasimon.. They published two volumes before they went under.. Do you guys have any intentions of continuing where they left off? I love this series and would really like to have the rest of it on my shelf.
When the book gets published the SFX are in English not Japanese, right?
Hi Hurley — The SFX will be in both English and Japanese in this edition.
Okay.
Oh yes, also is it possible to publish Oh-Roh-Den by Kentaro Miura for the first time? Dark Horse published King of Wolves, the prequel, but never did Oh roh den.
Excited! Been waiting so long for this!
Okay. WILL THE WHOLE VINLAND SERIES BE PUBLISHED 2 BOOKS IN 1?
Just to catch up with the original japan release?
Yes, all of our volumes will be 2-in-1.
